Much as we’d like to relax, real life means working to achieve our respective goals. Still, it’s counterproductive to think that relaxation isn’t “productive.” Pampering yourself should still be on the holiday wish list, especially if you plan on having a perfect season of joy. Still, it’s another one of those goals that are easier said than done. Ironically, relaxation can take a lot of work for a workaholic.

Even so, it’s no small thing to take a day off, especially with how hectic modern life can be. After all, nobody has infinite energy, and rest is crucial for recovering physically and mentally. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways people can pamper themselves these days, and some of these may even become part of your soothing routine.

The Best Self-Care Plans for the Holidays

What relaxes you is, unsurprisingly, up to you. That said, these activities may give you some ideas on how to relax this holiday season.

1. Change Your Morning Routine

Start your holiday mornings with intention. Make some spicy peppermint tea, light a festive by the window, and listen to cheery music while you plan your day. Stop worrying and nitpicking over tasks and replace them with moments of calm, like writing in a gratitude journal or taking a brisk walk to enjoy the holiday lights. These holiday flourishes make the season feel that much more festive.

2. Gift Yourself Something

Celebrate yourself by adding your name to your gift list. Reward yourself for everything you’ve pulled off this year, big and small. Whether it’s the latest gadgets or delicious cannabis-infused root beer, you deserve to give these pleasures to yourself. You could make it seasonal, like fancy hot chocolate by the fire or a snow day vacation. Gifting yourself is a good reminder that you are just as valid as everyone you gift to.

3. Clean Up Your Space

Turn your home into a festive retreat by cleaning up that clutter to make room for decorations. For long nights, arrange cozy blankets for guests and reorganize your kitchen for a holiday breakfast. Small touches like fairy lights, holiday wreaths, or scented pinecones add another sense of whimsy to the space that will make you feel soothed during the season’s busiest moments.

4. Go to a Hobby Event

Life makes having hobbies difficult at times, but holidays are the perfect time to spark those creative passions. If you love baking, participate in a cookie swap or holiday recipe competition. For those of a more outdoorsy vibe, perhaps a ski day is in order. Whatever you choose to do,  immerse yourself in the season’s joy and be proud of the person you’ve become, one activity at a time.

5. Don’t be Afraid to Say No

If you don’t feel like going somewhere, it’s valid to say no. Your reasons for taking a mental break from crowds and social gatherings are valid. Besides, not all of them are going to be crucial milestones. There’s no need to stretch yourself thin, especially if there’s no real consequence to not going, other than an awkward interaction or two. When you say no, you save yourself for the occasions that truly matter.

6. Catch Up on Favorite Media

Books, TV shows, movies, and video games that have been sitting on the backlog for months will keep eating away at your brain. Sate those temptations by giving in, and catching up on all those stories and experiences you’ve put off for so long. Even better, do these with friends and have a special themed celebration about it. Two birds with one stone, plus popcorn.

7. Ease Up on the Internet

Take breaks from screens and immerse yourself in the holiday atmosphere. Spend an afternoon crafting holiday cards, decorating cookies, or reading by the fire. Limit time online by setting specific hours to check emails or post photos, and instead focus on real-world experiences, like hosting a small holiday gathering or taking a snowy walk.

8. Spend a Day with a Loved One

Use the holidays to create lasting memories with the people you love. Bake holiday treats with your parents or go on that long-overdue date with a significant other. These shared experiences deepen your connections and bring warmth to the holiday season. If nothing else, they remind you of who you’re spending all this effort in life for.

Final Thoughts

Adjusting to a more relaxed mindset during the holidays, ironically, can be quite stressful. It’s difficult to “force” yourself into a calmer person. If it were so simple, then we wouldn’t have to put in so much effort to feel okay.  The season often feels like a race—shopping, hosting, attending events, and checking off endless to-do lists. Stepping back and prioritizing yourself transforms the chaos into something meaningful.

When you prioritize yourself, that self-love will inevitably spread to those around you. A relaxed and happy you brings warmth and light to gatherings, strengthens connections, and truly embraces the season’s spirit. Taking care of yourself is never selfish—it’s the gift that keeps on giving, and everyone around you will feel that holiday cheer.
